The Carrasco Brothers’ Story

The Carrasco Brothers’ - Christian and Joan

By Christian Carrasco:

Influenced by our father’s musical background (he was the drummer of the well-known, 60´s Spanish rock band, The Sirex), we started singing during our childhood. Along with our mum, Isabel Comas, we crooned through songs by Los 5 Latinos, Los TNT, and classic Doo Wop songs by the Marcels, Diamonds, Chiffons and, especially, the 80´s revival band--Rocky Sharpe & The Replays.

We started collecting records, and recording cassettes of Doo Wop songs from the radio show Flor de Pasión, with DJ Juan de Pablos. Joan and I used to sing "Rama Lama Ding Dong" while carrying a big radio cassette player as we walked around the streets. We also enjoyed singing along with songs like "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" while making funny faces in the mirror, which caused us to have uncontrollable outbursts of laughter.

Through the years, Joan learned to play a number of instruments by ear--showing a special talent for piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, bongos, drums and wind instruments. He’s currently the drummer and background singer for the "Cram" rock band.

During the 90’s I was heavily influenced by the German group, The Crystalairs. That led to my singing Doo Wop with some neighborhood friends. During the next fifteen years I was part of several projects before we met Jordi--with whom we decided to form The Earth Angels. I sing the baritone/bass parts, while Joan does falsetto, tenor and deep bass.

I was born in a household filled with jazz music. My father played records by Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson over and over. That music became part of the family´s daily soundtrack. Both of my parents had extensive record collections, and it was through my mum that I first had the chance to listen to 50’s artists such as Elvis and the Platters.

I remember the first Doo Wop record my father bought for me at a jazz store when I was about 8 years old--"Original Classics Doo Wop Hits, 1955-1965" (Vogue PIP). It contained such songs as "Genie of the Lamp" by the Ly-Dells and "Lily Maebelle" by the Valentines. I was hooked on the sound instantly. From then on, I became an avid collector of any Doo Wop record I could find; I would listen to all those amazing groups for hours in my room. I sang all through my teenage years, delighted by the sounds of Frankie Lymon, the Students, and Dino & the Diplomats, among many others.

Years later, I saw an ad on a musicians’ web page that someone was looking for a Doo Wop singer, and I called immediately. The guy on the other line turned out to be Christian Carrasco--a baritone/bass singer with a satiny voice and a wonderful charm. I’ve been singing along with him ever since on many street corners, at parties, and on radio and tv stations. The time came when his brother Joan, with his multi-ranged voice talent, joined us--leading to the formation of the Earth Angels.
